What are the ingredients to make a film that Marcey will go crazy over? Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White and amazing martial arts, that’s what! I felt like Undisputed II was made just for me, and it has become of one of favourite films! This is a sequel to Undisputed which starred Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames, they are not in this film but Michael Jai White takes over Ving Rhames in the role of boxer George Chambers. Where Undisputed was about prison boxing, Undisputed 2 takes it up a notch and this is still based in prison however these men fight using mixed martial arts (MMA).
So we find George Chambers after his first prison stint is hard up for work, he’s in Russia trying to make what money he can with his manager. But he’s set up, and sent to prison for the purpose of fighting in the prison fights. The main man, the prized fighter is Russian Uri Boyka (Scott Adkins) who proclaims he is the best in the world. Of course the fights are there so men can bet and make money, so Chambers finds the odds are stacked against him. He gets help training with the help of Crot (Eli Danker), and it wont be long before you are on the edge of your seat waiting for that final showdown between Boyka and Chambers.
Undisputed 2 is directed by Isaac Florentine who later went on to do Ninja, which I reviewed not long ago. I feel that Undisputed 2 is a better film, it has a good script and the two leads are both so charismatic and so talented it was just a real blast to see them on the screen together. The fight scenes are mind blowing, the choreography is just fantastic and I can’t get enough of them. The final showdown is fantastic, and both men look amazing. I really couldn’t pick a winner, as much of an ass as Boyka is I just loved his character. Sure it has those moments that are typical of these films, and maybe it can be a little far fetched, but if you can put that aside there is a lot to enjoy here. Michael Jai White is in top form, both with his acting and his martial arts skills. The man is fantastic, he really got into the character and he had the right chemistry with Scott Adkins. And now to Scott Adkins, he had a decent Russian accent and he looks so badass as Boyka, he will blow your mind with what he can do. He has great charisma as Boyka and you can tell he really just fit into this role and made a memorable character.
This film is one that I can re-watch over and over again, it is such a good time. Whether you are into martial arts films or not I would still recommend checking it out. This is the kind of film I would gladly show to my mother who isn’t big on martial arts films but I know she’d enjoy this. You’ll find you want to go for George Chambers, whereas in Undisputed his character along with Snipes you just couldn’t get behind either of them. But you’ll also enjoy Boyka, and by the end you really will be cheering for their showdown. I can’t recommend this one enough!
What timing! Just the other day I watched “Undisputed II & III”! (II for the second, and III for the first time)
I completely agree with your review, MJW and Adkins are amazing, both in physical appearance and martial arts prowess, especially Adkins who nailed his character Boyka to the core. I feel this series is a rare if not the only example when the B-league sequels are better than the A-league first film.
For action and MMA fans, this is required viewing.
