Bede’s Movie Exchange Club November Blog-A-Thon Video Review #3: Matinee (1993)

What’s a Blog-a-thon? This blog-a-thon is a challenge, its participants have chosen films the other has not seen to watch and review.

November Blog-a-thon criteria: Hidden 90′s Gems

Why Sam Chose This Film For Bede: “I so nearly made Bede’s life difficult with this BlogAThon, I was really tempted (after giving him four hours of Japanese language insanity for the last film swap we did) to hand him a six hour, two part, French film.  Ah well, next time.  Instead I took pity on the man, and gave him one of my all time favourites.  Matinee is a film I’ve loved and grown up with for nearly twenty years now, and I think that’s because it combines so many things I love; it’s an intelligent and charming coming of age movie, it’s a very funny comedy, it’s got a little political content, but most of all it’s a love letter to cinema.  I didn’t grow up with B-Movies like Mant, the film within a film here, but Matinee remains the film that best captures what going to the movies, at it’s best, felt like as a kid.  I love it from top to bottom, some of it joys are obvious (John Goodman’s performance, a near career peak), some fleeting (a very early role for Naomi Watts), but whenever I watch Matinee I’m left with a warm glow of nostalgia, and reminded why I love movies.  I hope it’s similar for Bede.”

Here’s my video review of the film. Enjoy!
