THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (1970)
Dario Argento’s first solo directorial effort The Bird With The Crystal Plumage is an absolutely fantastic film. If you have seen his other earlier works from the 70’s and 80’s you’ll have a good idea of what to expect. The film is a classic ‘giallo’, a mystery/thriller/horror that finds a writer in pursuit of a serial killer in Italy. He finds a woman under attack one night, and after the police are sure it wasn’t him he joins them in the investigation. He sure there is something ‘off’ about the situation and he tries his best to figure it out. The killer does not want any of that and is soon after him and his friend.
The mystery here is a good one; it kept me guessing right up until the end. Tony Musante was fantastic as the lead Sam, and a great man to have to follow around for the entire film. The direction and script were superb and seeing the seeds planted here for what Argento was doing to make a career out of is just amazing. Such an awesome experience, and I can’t recommend this film enough.
