Dir.: Guillermo Del Toro
Starring: Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Charlie Hunam, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman and Ron Perlman
We get near-apocalyptic in Del Toro’s affectionate love letter to battle mechs and ornery kaiju in one of 2013’s big blockbuster films that shows you that bigger can sometimes be better, in fact it is encouraged. If you are going to make a film primarily devoted to kinetic and exciting battle royaltes between humans piloting gigantic suits of power armor and monsters, you can’t afford to go in half cocked. Thankfully, Del Toro and co. know what you want and are more than happy to give it to you with a hug, a kiss and drink (I would say something else but I want to keep it classy, kids). But therein lies the true issue of the film- this movie was designed with the view of showing it on a big screen in a movie theatre complete with surround sound that will make your seat vibrate and your butt shake, to watch it on blu-ray in the comfort of your own home lessens the punch you get, but there is still plenty of fun to be had here, namely with the fights, the awe-inspiring designs of both the Jaegers and kaiju and the adoration put into establishing a world teetering on the brink of annihilation.
