[Wrestling] Match of the Day: Kevin Steen vs. El Generico (ROH Final Battle 2010)

MATCH OF THE DAY: KEVIN STEEN VS. EL GENERICO (RING OF HONOR FINAL BATTLE 2010)

There is a reason I am so excited as a professional wrestling fan to see the feud between the newly branded Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn feud take place in WWE NXT. That reason can be attributed to the legendary feud between these two men that was born during there time in Ring of Honor wrestling. The catalyst for the feud is something we’ve seen time and time again, former best friends and tag team partners turned bitter rivals. The difference here is that rare occurence where the two participants in the feud are so well equipped with in ring psychology that they are able to get you emotionally invested. The stakes in this particular match were high, in that if El Generico lost the bout he would have to take off his mask, whereas if Steen lost it’s ‘hit-the-road-jack’ time as far as his ROH career was concerned. I won’t give away the result of the match, I will just let you marvel at the in ring prowess of two of the best in the game today.

Fast forward to WWE NXT, Kevin Steen made his mark last week at NXT Takeover now known as Kevin Owens. He made his in-ring debut in a short but sweet match with CJ Parker. He came out later in the night to celebrate the title victory of Sami Zayn (El Generico) that had eluded him for months. In a brilliant turn of events Owens turned on Zayn to reignite this great feud. The vignettes leading up to Owens’ debut have set this up perfectly, Owens is naturally bitter that his former best friend has reached the top of the mountain they now share before him. Pride will be the basis for this feud. It is a Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels for a new generation, and I can’t put my excitement into words.
