MATCH OF THE DAY: STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN VS. BRET “THE HITMAN” HART (WRESTLEMANIA 13)

Todays selection is inspired by the birthday of the texas rattlesnake Stone Cold Steve Austin. Happy Birthday you tough SOB! With all the pleasantries aside, everyone who is a die hard fan of professional wrestling knows this match changed the landscape of the industry forever. In 1997, the attitude of society was taking a turn and that was reflected in the crowd response at WWE events. On paper, the foul mouthed, no respect for anyone Stone Cold Steve Austin should be considered one of the most dastardly villains in the companies history. Slowly, the fans showed signs that they began to appreciate the brash attitude of the charactr Steve Austin embraced. Fans were beginning to turn on squeaky clean heroes like one Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart. It was at Wrestlemania 13 that this movement really got underway, in what has become an infamous “double-turn” in which Stone Cold switched places and became the fan favorite Bret Hart once held, Hart took over the villainous M.O. The match itself is one of the best in Wrestlemania history with an ending that showed what a real “hero” is made of, that saw a bloodied Stone Cold who’d rather pass out than tap to Hart’s sharpshooter.

Stone Cold has gone on record and said that his heated feud with Bret Hart is one of, if not the best feud he’s ever been a part of. So today we pay tribute to probably the best match in one of the many feuds Steve Austin helped turn into pure gold. Happy Birthday again, rattlesnake! I’ll throw back a few steveweisers for you.
