Welcome to this Podcast series from The Super Podcast with The King Zone! This podcast series is all about the adaptations of Stephen King, from the cinematic films, mini-series and TV movies!
Your regular co-hosts Super Marcey and the Terrible Australian Bede are back, and we’re not alone for this episode as we are joined by returning special guest Rob Hunter from Film School Rejects. This is a pretty jam packed episode for us as we will be covering both Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film and Mick Garris’ 1997 TV miniseries adaptations of Stephen King’s legendary novel The Shining and Mike Flanagan’s 2019 film adaptation of novel’s sequel Doctor Sleep. Now before you listen to the episode, we thought that we let you something about it. Originally Super Marcey herself couldn’t make the initial recording of the episode due to health reasons, so Bede and Rob recorded it together with just themselves rather than postponing since it had been in the works for a while. However when Marcey was feeling better a few days later, she recorded her own separate segment with her thoughts on all three adaptations, which has been included at the tail end of this episode for you all to listen.
The Shining (1980) was directed by Stanley Kubrick, based upon Stephen King’s 1977 novel of the same name, and it stars Jack Nicolson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers and Danny Lloyd. The Shining (1997) is a TV miniseries was directed by Mick Garris, with a teleplay written by Stephen King, also based upon his 1977 novel of the same name, and it stars Rebecca De Mornay, Steven Weber, Melvin Van Peebles, Pat Hingle, Elliott Gould and Courtland Mead. Both tell the story of Jack Torrance, a recovering alcoholic who is driven insane by the ghosts of a motel that he and his family (wife Wendy and psychic son Danny) are caretakers of during the off-season. Doctor Sleep (2019) was directed by Mike Flanagan, based on Stephen King’s 2013 novel of the same name, and it stars Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran and Cliff Curtis. Set 39 years after the events of The Shining, it follows a grown up Danny Torrance as he must protect a young girl with similar psychic powers named Abra from a vampiric cult known as the True Knot.
Highlights include:

* We discuss the differences between Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation and Stephen King’s original novel
* Even though Mick Garris’ The Shining miniseries is more faithful to the novel, but does that mean that it’s any good?
* We all agree that Doctor Sleep is a great sequel
* In her own separate segment, Marcey discusses in-depth her thoughts on the two films and miniseries. Especially The Shining, which she has own theories about
* Marcey & Rob both have a connection to the original place that inspired The Shining novel
* Plus much, much more!
