Bede’s Top 10 Films Of 2025

Here we go again! Every year when it comes to my top 10 films of the year list, I always plan on releasing it earlier — at least by February. Mainly so I can fit in more films that I missed from the previous year to see if they were worthy enough to make the list. Once again, that wasn’t the case, since I’ve finally published this in June.

There are many reasons why it took me longer than expected, the main ones being a mixture of both my personal and work life. However, I’m always determined to write it regardless of when it gets released. Now that it has, what did I think of 2025 as a whole in cinema? I must admit that for at least the first two thirds of the year, I honestly thought it was a rather weak year in cinema. That all changed thankfully once the final third came around. It was all the great films released in that part of the year that convinced me 2025 was a pretty solid one for cinema overall.

There were a lot of films that I loved, and I think this final list is quite representative of the ones I felt were the very best. Now, before I go into my official top 10 films of 20

NOTE: I’ve only included films that were officially released theatrically, on home media or on streaming platforms in either Australia, the U.K. or the U.S. during 2025. However some films that I saw at film festivals in 2025 won’t be included if they haven’t had a official release in either of those three countries during that year.

…And now onto my official top 10 films of 2025…

10. AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH

(Dir: James Cameron)

While I’m sure some people will see this 3rd entry in the franchise as being “more of the same”, personally I thought it was just excellent as the previous two. It’s absolutely captivating, visually stunning and without a doubt the most emotional of the series so far. Once again, never doubt James Cameron or this franchise.”

9. THE PERFECT NEIGHBOR

(Dir: Geeta Gandbhir)

“This was an absolutely powerful, riveting, emotional, enraging and gripping documentaries that’s extremely effective due to the filmmakers constructing it almost entirely from the POV of the police body-cam/security footage that was shot during these events. There’s no debate about what has happened here, because the footage speaks for itself.”

8. THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB

(Dir: Kaouther Ben Hania)

“Even though I was emotionally prepared for this film given the real life event that a dramatises, this was still an absolutely gut-punching and devastating watch. The performances were all excellent, the filmmaking was superb and it knows how to grip you from start to finish. As heartbreaking as it is, this is an important film that needs to be seen.”

7. BRING HER BACK

(Dir: Danny Philippou & Michael Philippou)

“While I think that their first fim TALK TO ME was great debut, I think that this sophomore effort from Philippou Brothers better in every way. It’s a truly captivating, dark, unsettling, emotional raw and superbly crafted horror that grips you start to finish. Sally Hawkins was exceptional.”

6. LITTLE AMELIE OR THE CHARACTER OF RAIN

(Dir: Maïlys Vallade & Liane-cho Han)

“While it isn’t on the same level as FURY ROAD was, this was still an absolutely fantastic, action-packed and riveting prequel/spin-off from George Miller that’s a different beast all together by adding even more layers to the character of “Furiosa” than the previous entry.”

5. ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER

(Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson)

“I don’t know how he does it, but Paul Thomas Anderson has delivered another masterpiece. His latest film is an absolutely fantastic piece of cinema that’s equally political, hilarious, intense, riveting, satirical and hugely entertaining. The performances, filmmaking and script were top-notch.”

4. MARTY SUPREME

(Dir: Josh Safdie)

“Leave to director Josh Safdie to make a film that could have easily been a straightforward sports film, instead it becomes an absolutely thrilling and darkly comedic crime film that just keeps escalating throughout. It’s brilliantly made film on every level and Timothee Chalamet’s excellent performance is without a doubt the best of his career so far.”

3. SINNERS

(Dir: Ryan Coogler)

“Yep. This definitely lived up to the hype. Ryan Coogler’s latest is without a doubt his best work so far. Not only is it a truly great vampire film, it also tackles some truly captivating ideas and themes that elevate it into something unique. The entire cast, the filmmaking, cinematography, score and production/costume design were all terrific.”

2. SIRAT

(Dir: Oliver Laxe)

“Simply extraordinary. It starts off being a rather  compelling, hypnotic and fun journey with some likeable oddball racer characters but once it hits it’s halfway point, it becomes an absolutely riveting, shocking, heartbreaking and intense experience to the very end. The cast, the direction, the cinematography, soundtrack and sound design were all equally fantastic. I know some people may dislike that it doesn’t go further with certain plot elements but for me personally, it added to the film.”

1. 28 YEARS LATER

(Dir: Danny Boyle)

“As someone who loved the first two films, this long awaited third entry was worth the wait. In fact, i think it’s the best one so far. This was absolutely fantastic sequel that’s terrifying, captivating, intense, experimental, thematically rich, subversive and even incredibly emotional. While the cast all gave fantastic work with their performances, but its young newcomer Alfie Williams who was particularly exceptional in the lead role. Even though there were so many great films that were released in 2025, this was the one that floored me the most.”
