DVD Review: Neighbours 30th – The Stars Reunite [PG]

Neighbours DVDHosted By: Stefan Dennis and Tim Phillipps

The Special: This may come as a shock to some of my readers in Australia and the UK, but I am a huge Neighbours fan. I have been watching the show for as long as I can remember, and I have been a loyal fan all my life. Yes I still watch it every week night at 6:30pm on channel 11, sometimes we even make sure dinner is ready in time for the show. Hard to believe the show has been on the air for 30 years, making it Australia’s longest running show.

It’s a really nice tribute to have this special, with the stars of the show sharing all of their memories. Impressive that the likes of Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce, Jason Donovan and Craig McLachlan have come back to talk about the show, and its lasting impressing. Even recent stars like Margot Robbie are included, discussing the show. It is a nice piece, mixed together with the interviews, old footage and some real classic moments.

For long time fans it really is a great chance to relive some of those classic moments and to see old characters long forgotten. For the newer fans it is good for them to get a taste of the early days, and to see just how far the show has come. But let us be fair, this is a special for the fans, there isn’t much point in checking this out if you hate Neighbours. I had a blast watching it, laughing with some of the stories and shaking my head at some of the awful storylines (Bouncer’s dream episode, yikes).

As much as I enjoyed the main feature, it really needed more. There was a lot of ground not covered, so much more could have been looked into, and it would have been an added bonus to have interviews with directors and writers from over the years as well. Neighbours has had a lot of memorable episodes and moments, lots of disasters and some of the classics weren’t brought up. Even some of the sader deaths didn’t get much of a mention (Jim Robinson anyone? And no Alan Dale interview). But at the end of the day there is only so much time, and they really did the best they could with it.

Neighbours is an Australian tradition, and it is a part of my every day life. I enjoy the show, I always explore the spoilers and look forward to whats coming next. The special really justified my love for the show, and seeing all the stars it has made over the years is something quite special. It’s a great addition into the DVD collection, and something I’ll revisit from time to time. Happy 30th Anniversary Neighbours.

Wedding Neighbours

The Australian DVD
Audio/Video: Impressive quality here for both the Video and Audio, it is about as good as it gets with DVD, well done.

Extras: The extra features here are extended interviews with past and present cast members. They are around 5-10minutes a piece, so not too long and quite interesting to see some talk about things that didn’t quite get touched on in the main feature. I really enjoyed having these as part of the DVD set, it’s also interesting to see what parts got left out of the main feature

Extended Interviews With:
* Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy)
* Anne Charleston (Madge Bishop)* Annie Jones (Jane Harris)
* Ashleigh Brewer (Kate Ramsey)
* Dan McPherson (Joel Samuels)
