MATCH OF THE DAY: RIC FLAIR VS. TERRY FUNK (CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS 1989 – I QUIT MATCH)
Why did I select this particular match for today? Well I’m currently weaving my way through Mick Foley’s second autobiographical opus ‘Foley Is Good’, and in it he features a list of his favorite matches up until that point, and this classic match was included. For good reason. Clash of the Champions IX was dubbed ‘The New York Knockout’ and took place in Troy, New York to a crowd of 4,000. At the event, Ric Flair was the current NWA World Heavyweight Champion, the title was not on the line however, so all Flair had to do was prove that he was indeed the dirtiest player in the game, and indeed he did against one of the toughest SOB’s the business has ever seen in the legendary Terry Funk. I Quit matches have always been one of the most entertaining gimmick matches in my opinion, and this stands as probably the best in existence. Dave Meltzer, famed pro wrestling journalist, awarded this match five stars. I’m here to tell you, it’s something me and Mr. Meltzer see eye to eye on. So feast your eyes on greatness from two of the best, folks. WHOOO!!
