It’s been a few weeks(thank you knee surgery), but I’m back with this week’s Legends of Horror! This week, I am going to discuss somebody that hasn’t appeared in many horror films but has been an incredible force in the genre for over thirty years. I’m talking about the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira!
Elvira is the creation of the lovely Cassandra Peterson. A self professed lover of B-movies, she is perhaps the most recognizable Horror Host in the history of television. Regardless of how good or how bad the movie she was presenting, she made her show must watch television with her combination of humor, stage presence and raw sexuality.
She’s known for one thing above all else. Well, two things. Unlike many other women though, her highlighting of her chest has never felt truly sleazy(although she might be argue differently!). Instead, she not only used them for sex appeal but she also has used them for a lot of jokes. Not many people can compete with her in boob puns!
Honestly though, the thing that strikes me the most about her is her personality. Yeah, surprising I know. But the fact is, she’s incredibly likable. Her jokes are funny and she has never shied away from making fun of herself. She almost giddily presents some really bad B-movies with a genuine love that most Horror Hosts never get across.
Her Most Well Known Work
Elvira’s Movie Macabre
Hands down, she’s most well known for Elvira’s Movie Macabre. On that show, which recently saw a revival on DVD, she has presented some incredibly entertaining movies. Her skits between, before and after commercial breaks, make even the most ludicrous movies all the more entertaining.
As a young horror fan, she helped me grow into the horror fan I am today. In fact, she is directly responsible for my first ever viewing of the original Night of the Living Dead. She also is directly responsible for my hitting puberty with this show, but that’s a topic for another time.
Mistress of the Dark and Elvira’s Haunted Hills
Elvira has made some actual movies featuring the character that stand out. Are they particularly great films? Not really but they are very fitting for the character. In Mistress of the Dark, she inherits an old mansion in a stuffy New England town. Needless to say, her presence doesn’t go over very well. It’s an entertaining enough flick that you really can’t take to seriously. Much like the movies she presents!
In Elvira’s Haunted Hills, the Mistress of the Dark stays at an old castle in Carpathia after a little money problem at a local inn. The fact that she’s a dead ringer for the count’s long dead wife has absolutely NOTHING to do with the shenanigans that go down. Like the previous movie, this is a fun little flick that really centers around the Elvira character.
I highly recommend both for some cheesy fun.
I know this is a shorter Legends of Horror than normal but what else is there to say? Elvira is a true Legend of Horror that has inspired countless women and inspired countless men. Millions of fans owe a lot to the Mistress of the Macabre, so do yourself a favor and check out some episodes of Elvira’s Movie Macabre as well as Mistress of the Dark and Elvira’s Haunted Hills to see why we love her so much! And now, a couple more pictures. Why? Why not?!?!
In the next Legends of Horror, I am going to discuss a director that taught us if the cat’s dead, you’ll get the details later!
