WWE No Mercy 2002: Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker (Hell in a Cell) Undisputed Championship
Last nights shocker at WrestleMania 30 made me think of the past feuds these two have graced us with, and this Hell in a Cell match at No Mercy 2002 proved to be their best. The match had an amazing build-up, early on with Brock Lesnar injuring Undertaker’s hand that made a cast necessary. Said cast was used as a wonderful plot device in the weeks leading up to the match, with a babyface Stephanie granting the use of it at the PPV. Another side plot on Smackdown had to do with Paul Heyman bringing in a female from Undertaker’s past to try to cause some trouble, in an awesome segment Stephanie McMahon destroyed this Jezebel’s credibility, much to Undertaker’s gratitude.
The match itself was beyond brutal. The cell was utilized, Taker’s cast was utilized and Brock spent a lot of time working more on the hand. Paul Heyman got caught in harms way at one point, as even being safe on the outside of the cell didn’t save Paul E from suffering Undertaker’s wrath. These were days when the WWE universe was a bit thirsty for blood, so that meant these were the days WWE didn’t shy away from it. By the end of the match, as good ol JR would say, Taker’s face was a crimson mask. Bottom line, this match hit all the right notes, had intense spots and brutal moments. Both men gave it their all, it is definitely a classic.
