DVD Review: Betty White’s Off Their Rockers – Season 1 [M15]

Director: Tim Gibbons
Starring: Betty White, Reatha Grey, Micahel Yama

The Show:
Betty White is the darling of comedy; she has been entertaining us all for generations. Thanks to a Superbowl commercial for Snickers several years’ back, her popularity has risen to possibly an all time high. It is no wonder she hosts her own comedy show, a hidden camera show in the same vein as ‘Candid Camera’ and the like. Shows of this sort can be hit and miss, and when I saw my mother watching the show one day on Comedy Central I decided to check it out with caution. My own Betty White experiences stem back to the Golden Girls, a show I grew up watching and I loved Rose. I still watch the show now actually, and I am often surprised by some of its humour. So what did I think of Off Their Rockers?

I was actually pleasantly surprised by what I saw, and I thought the show was actually rather funny. Basically the senior citizens play pranks on the younger folk, with hilarious results. For the most part, these jokes work and I found myself laughing quite a lot. Not all of them hit, and some are just too awkward to watch. The entire cast does a great job in all honestly, and they really prove that you’re never too old to have fun and have a sense of humour.

The show rather surprisingly (to me anyway) has a lot of sexual related humour and it does try and play to the stereotypes of their age demographic. I am sure it could possibly offend some people, but their clear intention is to make people laugh and to give them more of an open mind of older people. Viewers may ask themselves if jokes can be taken too far, and sometimes they do. However I had a good time with the show, as did my mother – I am sure fans of Betty White will get a kick out of this and for fans of this type of show.

Reviewers Note: This review is much shorter than my usual ones; the reason being is that I am dealing with an injury and chronic migraines. Sorry for the mini-review and I do hope I can go back to full-length ones in the near future.

The Australian DVD:
The DVD I reviewed was a screener, so I am unable to comment on Picture/Audio quality.
