DVD Review: New Girl Season 1 [M15]

Starring: Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone

The Show: New Girl is a show that took me a few episodes to really get into, but once I did it was really worth sticking with. It is fun, funny, quirky and actually very delightful. The characters are all very different to each other, and in some odd way relatable (even Schmidt!).

The premise about a girl living with three guys may not seem overly original but the way it plays out is great. Of course hilarity will ensue but this show handles that in such a unique way, it is unpredictable and surprising.

I really like the writing and execution, it just comes together really well. It certainly is one of the better comedies I’ve seen recently, and aside from the first few episodes it has remained very consistent and funny.

Zooey Deschanel fans, this show is for you! It really is, if you like her and aren’t watching, get right on it. I haven’t minded her film work, I’ve always thought there was something there with her, and I found her to be very naturally charming. She is in her element here as Jess and I was completely won over. I may not have been a big fan of Zooey but I sure am now thanks to the show. Jess is the very definition of ‘adorkable’, down to Earth but with her head in the clouds, she’s a really great character.

Everyone else is great, but in particular I think Max Greenfield (who has come a long way since Leo in Veronica Mars) is the stand out. He plays such a kooky character, full of bad decisions but in some odd way lovable. There is so much to love about each cast member, they are just exceptional.

This is a show that can be watched time and again, perfect to own on DVD. If you haven’t seen it yet, give it a shot, it is worth the time.
