Marcey’s Halloween Horror Picks!

Well special guest writer Pat has already given you his picks for Halloween, it is now my turn! I decided to give you a list of what I would consider a pretty solid marathon for Halloween night! While I might not be able to do this myself tonight on Halloween (I have a 2 day late birthday dinner scheduled), I will in fact be doing this marathon during the week. I have picked three titles which I consider to be my ultimate night of fun and horror. I am not sure if these would be considered typical picks, I have gone with a more comedic approach. Enjoy!

AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981)

This is my all time favourite werewolf film and in general one of my favourite horror films. What sets this film a part is it’s clever blend of horror and comedy, and of course the amazing FX by Rick Baker. This is a film that I can watch over and over again, it is such a fun film! I love the story and the incredibly likable characters, it is what also makes this some what of a tragedy. In my opinion this has one of the best opening scenes, which sets the mood and tone for the rest of the film. The transformation scene still holds up amazingly well today, and it is just one of the most memorable scenes from a film. I just love the performances from Griffin Dunne as Jack and David McNaughton as David. Both of these guys manage to make the situations horrific as well as add that perfect blend of humour. For a good scare and a good laugh, this is the perfect place to start!

Re-Animator (1985)

To keep with the horror/comedy theme, I have chosen my all time favourite horror film Re-Animator. This is a perfect companion piece, not only because they both have the comedy element but this one deals with another icon of the horror genre, zombies! From the opening scene, you know you will be in for quite the ride! The film boasts some amazing scenes of gore, mixed with incredibly pitch black humour. This film has given me at least the most memorable film character Herbert West played to absolute perfection by Jeffrey Combs. This is a different sort of zombie film, where the zombie’s come to life after an injection of some reagent. They haven’t taken over the world, just running wild at Miskatonic Medical School. This is quite possibly one of most fun times you can have with a film!

Drag Me To Hell (2009)

Now I know people will be thinking, why didn’t you just go with Evil Dead 2? Well I already picked two 80’s classics, and I think the perfect film to wrap up with is a modern classic! Drag Me To Hell gave me one of the best (and memorable) cinema going experiences, the audience were all so into the action, it was a riot. Sam Raimi went back to his roots with this film, he dived back into horror but adding in the comedy elments which worked so well for him before. This could have almost been Evil Dead 4, it certainly is in the same spirit as those previous films. Our main character of Christine (A fantastic Alison Lohman) is as unlucky as Ash, enduring so much horror and terror, it just seems to be never ending. Despite the insane horror which is inflicted upon her, the humor is just so fantastically done you can’t help but have a great time!
