[31 Days Of Horror] Mini Review – Prison (1988)

PRISON (1988)

Renny Harlin, Viggo Mortensen and Lane Smith, a recipe for awesome right? You betchya!

As I became a fan of Renny Harlin’s, I really wanted to discover his earlier work. As you could imagine, it was really hard to find. But by chance I came across Prison (1988) and I had to grab the film and scope it out. I decided it was probably worth waiting for October so I can add it to my 31 Days, and yes it really belongs on the list. This film is one of those hidden gems, I wanted my list to have some less known titles, and I am so glad I discovered this film.

Part prison film, part ghost story and even part slasher, this film is a wild ride from start to finish. An executed prisoners spirit haunts the previous abandoned prison, and when it gets re-opened he is hell bent on revenge. Sounds cool right? It really is too! Very well made for a small budget, everything about it just worked so well.

The actors are great, especially Lane Smith and Viggo Mortensen who both really steal the show. The effects are really awesome, and there almost felt like a bit of an Elm Street vibe, kind of great that Renny went on to the franchise.

Highly recommended if you can find it, this ones a real treat.
