Killers

2.5/5
Killer’s is about a woman Jen (Katherine Heigl), who after a break up goes on a vacation with her parents (Catherine O’Hara and Tom Selleck). Whilst on said vacation she meets mysterious Spencer (Ashton Kutcher), he seems to be an agent working for the CIA maybe? She doesn’t know that, and after spending time together Spencer decides he wants out of that life. They get married, all seems well and good until one day people they thought were their friends try to assassinate them.
Killer’s does have a bit of a weird premise, which is actually kind of the appeal with seeing this kind of romantic comedy. I’m not the biggest fan of romantic films, so the added action part of this certainly got my attention. However Killer’s is a bit of an uneven film, it tries to be all different things but they don’t quite mesh as well as they could have. I didn’t mind the action part of the film, some of it ended up being more violent then I expected (not a bad thing). The romance part didn’t quite do it for me, we didn’t really get much of a feel for these two characters. So when they are suddenly put into this situation I just didn’t care all that much with what was going to happen to them. Comedy-wise it was hit and miss, some jokes worked, whilst others didn’t quite hit the mark.
The major scoring point with this film is it’s leading man, Ashton Kutcher. He’s a charismatic and funny guy, I enjoyed him every time he was on screen. He did make a lot of the comedy he had work, and he certainly shaped up for the part too! Unfortunately Katherine Heigl just was not a very likable character, and she was some what of a bore. Normally it’d be hilarious seeing that type of character in the situations she ended up being in, but I was not buying it. Sorry to say, she was not very good in this at all. The chemistry between the leads was almost non-existent, I didn’t feel any kind of attraction between the two. Supporting wise Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara were quite good, and I enjoyed them. All the other bit players were all rather forgettable, I can’t even remember them.
Some scenes were so silly and over the top, while some did work, others really fell flat. The twists and turns in this film were not exactly surprising either, I saw them coming very early on. Sure I am good at guessing the twists, but when it is that easy there is certainly a problem. Pacing was all over the place, it concentrated too much one scene and less on another when it should have been the other way around. The film was a decent enough effort, the ideas were there for sure. But it all just did not quite gel exactly the way it should have, if it did this would have been a much better film. If you want to see Director Luketic at his best, check out Legally Blonde.
