I will say it out right, I really did not like this film at all. The trailer looked awesome, I thought this would be a fun film, but it was far from it. Plot? There isn’t really one, God has lost faith in mankind (can’t say I blame him) and he unleashes the minions to teach us all a lesson, one rogue angel has come to put a stop to it, and this all ends up taking place at an out of the way diner with a cast of annoying characters. Oh then there is a pregnant girl, and apparently her baby is important for some reason and they need to keep her alive.
Yeah, weak plot, we’ve seen this kind of thing before really, usually it isn’t really God that is angry but in this case he is. We get stuck dealing with all this with the most annoying characters you could imagine, and you really do not want to be around them, get to know them, or for them to survive. You kind of want the minions to do away with them, and find a different band of survivors to get behind. Not only are they extremely annoying, you have a decent cast and they all just forgot to act. Dennis Quaid who I simply adore, was terrible here. He over acted like there was no tomorrow and he was just awful, even worse was Lucas Black. He couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag here, he was annoying and his character was just stupid. Adrianne Palicki wasn’t too bad, but her character was annoying and there wasn’t much she could do there. Tyrese Gibson again wasn’t bad but his character was paper thin and he had nothing to work with. The only really decent one who worked despite the awful dialogue was Paul Bettany as the angel Michael. He was maybe the only really decent thing in this, besides Kevin Durand as the angel Gabriel. Durand can play this role in his sleep and it was good to see him, because everything else was really sucking.
This film introduced things and didn’t explain them, so many awfully obvious plot holes, it really gave me a headache. They did not explain why the unborn child was important, why Michael wanted it to be kept alive and why God needed the minions to kill it. None of that was explained, nothing was explained about why suddenly God got so angry at mankind, I mean we’ve been bastards for a long time. It felt like no one had read this script, and it was just a big old mess. Visually the film was good though, the affects were decent and there were some good looking scenes as well. But that cannot save a bad film, along with everything else this film felt long. It wasn’t long but I sure felt every second of it, and I was just waiting for it to go somewhere and get better but it didn’t. Do something better with these 90mins and skip this one, please. I sure wish I had!
